At Too Good To Go, we have an ambitious goal: to inspire and empower everyone to fight food waste together.

40% of all food produced in the world is wasted. And that has a huge impact on the health of our planet, with 10% of greenhouse gas emissions coming from food waste.

We’re more than an app: we are a certified B Corporation with a mission to empower everyone to take action against food waste, so alongside our marketplace app, we create educational tools, explore new business solutions - such as our Retail Technologies offering, and influence legislation to help reduce food waste.

We’re growing fast: Our community of 130 million registered users and 256,000 active partners across 20 countries, have together already prevented 501+ million meals from going to waste - avoiding over 1.352.000 tonnes of CO2e!

The Role

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to build, lead, and establish our new engineering hub in Madrid. This is a foundational role where you will be responsible for creating a high-performing engineering organization from the ground up. You will report directly to our CTO in Copenhagen and be a key member of the global Engineering Management team, working closely with our other hubs in Copenhagen and Paris.

Your primary mission is to hire and develop several product-focused engineering teams. This includes recruiting and managing the Engineering Leads who will be the daily managers for each team. The Tech Stack

You will be leading a multi-team organization working across our company's Tech Stacks:

Our marketplace backend is a Spring Boot Application running on Java 21 and a platform backend running Python/Django both on Kubernetes deployed in AWS. We have several frontend React.js projects written in TypeScript, as well as two Android Apps written primarily in Kotlin, and an iOS App written in Swift.

Responsibilities
  • Build and lead the Madrid engineering hub, including defining the hiring plan and recruiting engineers and Engineering Leads.
  • Manage, mentor, and support a team of Engineering Leads, ensuring their teams are effective and their team members have opportunities for personal growth.
  • Establish and oversee agile development processes across multiple teams, promoting a mindset of continuous improvement and efficient delivery.
  • Partner with Product Management and other stakeholders to align the Madrid hub’s work with the overall product roadmap and business objectives.
  • Be accountable for the technical quality, delivery, and performance of all engineering teams in Madrid.
  • Represent the Madrid hub within the global engineering leadership and ensure clear communication and collaboration with other sites.
  • Participate in the global engineering leadership on setting future directions for our Engineering department.
The Ideal Candidate
  • You have proven, hands-on experience building and scaling engineering teams, specifically within the Madrid technology market.
  • You have significant experience in a senior engineering leadership role, including experience managing other managers (Engineering Leads/Managers).
  • You possess a strong technical background and a broad understanding of our tech stacks, enabling you to guide technical decisions and earn the respect of your teams.
  • You are comfortable being responsible for People (hiring, culture, growth), Technical Strategy, and Delivery.
  • You are an excellent communicator and are experienced in working effectively with remote leadership and distributed teams.
  • You are driven to build a culture of technical excellence and to deliver high-quality, scalable products.
